Stairs can be a danger in the house, having carpet makes it softer should you slip. Hard surfaces tend to be slippery, especially to dogs. But you hate the look of that wore down plush carpet don't you! What I suggest is to make the staircase both functional and beautiful. The carpet on your stairs should be a design feature. Using a pattern carpet will hide dirt and give your guest something to talk about.

The other option is that if you absolutely love hardwood on your stairs you could always put a runner. Of course this will cover up a good percentage of the hardwood. But it's the best option if you want looks and protection.
